Mr. Murphy is an experienced litigator with expertise handling teacher and administrator disciplinary issues; student residency issues, including issues related to school admission based on visa status; proper use of school funds, including tort funds; and litigation against school districts based on alleged sexual misconduct by district employees.  Mr. Murphy also has extensive experience handling cases before administrative agencies such as the EEOC, the Illinois Department of Human Rights, the Illinois Human Rights Commission, the Cook County Commission on Human Rights, and the Illinois Labor Relations Board.

Prior to joining Scariano, Himes and Petrarca, Mr. Murphy worked in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office as a criminal prosecutor for ten years.  Thereafter, he became supervisor of the labor and employment unit of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office for ten years where he defended Cook County elected officials in labor and employment matters in federal and state appellate and trial courts.

For several years, Mr. Murphy was an Adjunct Professor of Trial Advocacy at the Chicago Kent College of Law.  He has also served for the past 13 years on the Board of Advisors to the annual Illinois Public Sector Labor Relations Law Program sponsored by Chicago-Kent College and was a presenter at the Illinois Council of School Attorneys annual conference in both 2005 and 2006.

Mr. Murphy attended St Mary’s College, in Winona, Minnesota in 1971, graduating summa cum laude.  In 1975 Mr. Murphy graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Law cum laude.  Mr. Murphy also attended the University of Chicago from 1986 to 1987 as a Benton Fellow while working as a member of the WBBM-TV investigative team.  During the six-year time period he worked as a member of investigative team at WBBM-TV, the station won several major awards including two Peabodys, two DuPont Columbias, and seven local Emmys.  Mr. Murphy is also a current member of the Board of Education of Glenview School District No. 34.
