Mr. Ciastko represents school districts with respect to general education law issues.  He has significant experience representing school districts and other local governmental agencies in general labor, employment and civil rights matters with an emphasis in employment discrimination litigation.  Mr. Ciastko has successfully represented clients in federal trials with defense verdicts in cases including:  (1) a class action with Title VII and 42 U.S.C. §1983 claims alleging a pattern and practice of race and political affiliation discrimination; (2) an ADA claim alleging a failure to accommodate; and (3) a matter alleging 42 U.S.C. §1983 claims under the First and Fourth Amendment.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Ciastko served as an assistant attorney general in the General Law Bureau of the Office of the Illinois Attorney General.  As an assistant attorney general Mr. Ciastko represented state agencies in general civil litigation with an emphasis in labor, employment and civil rights matters.  During his tenure at the Attorney General’s office, Mr. Ciastko successfully defended federal lawsuits brought against state agencies such as Northern Illinois University, Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board, the Illinois State Police, Department of Corrections and the Department of Human Services. 

Mr. Ciastko also served as lead counsel for various state agencies in trials before the Illinois Civil Service Commission and Illinois State Police Merit Board.  In addition, Mr. Ciastko represented the Illinois Department of Labor in numerous enforcement actions brought against Chicago area businesses for violations of state labor laws, including the Illinois Minimum Wage Law, the Illinois Wage Payment and Collection Act and Prevailing Wage Act. 

Mr. Ciastko also represented the Illinois Secretary of State’s office, Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, the Department of Children and Family Services, the Illinois Racing Board and other state agencies in administrative reviews, declaratory judgment actions and other equitable matters.
